What a legend. Paul Scholes is one of the greatest midfielders of our generation and one of the greatest of all times. I wouldn’t say that he is underrated but his name isn’t bought up enough. His name isn’t flashed around like Messi or Ronaldo.
Scholes spent his entire career at United. He even retired came back and retired again. One of the smartest players and best passers I have ever seen play the game of soccer. He can hit a pass dead on point from across the field and make it look so simple. There is a story that once during training Cristiano Ronaldo was ripping shots on the net and Scholes walked over. Ronaldo told reporters “When we were in training, I used to do a lot of tricks which hardly any players at the club could do. Once I was showing my skills to Scholes. After I finished, Scholes took the ball and pointed to a tree which was about 50m from where we were standing. He said, I’m going to hit it in one shot. He kicked and hit the tree. He asked me to do the same; I kicked about 10 times, but still couldn’t hit it, with that accuracy. He smiled and left”.
A reporter once asked Zinedine Zidane: “How does it feel to be the best midfielder in the world?”
Zidane replied: “Ask Paul Scholes”
Scholes played for Manchester united from 1993 to 2013. That includes him retiring and coming out of retirement against Manchester City when Ferguson was still coaching. He played 710 games, scored 149 goals, and had 62 assists in his career. Not only that he has a bunch of title cups in his trophy room as well. 2 Champions League cups, 11 Premier League cups, 4 FA Cups, and then some.
